HOW CARCAUSE WORKS

Troubleshooting should narrow the problem before you buy the part.

CarCause is built to help everyday drivers organize the evidence they already have and work through the next useful check in plain English.

CarCause starts with evidence, not a parts recommendation

Vehicle problems often have several possible causes that produce similar symptoms or the same trouble code. CarCause uses the vehicle, symptoms, conditions, recent work, and scanner information you provide to organize likely causes and suggest checks that can separate one possibility from another.

01Identify the vehicleUse year, make, and model, or enter the VIN when engine and trim choices are unclear.
02Describe what the car is doingNoises, warning lights, rough running, no-start conditions, smells, and when the problem happens all add useful context.
03Add scanner evidenceOBD-II codes are treated as evidence about a detected condition, not automatic proof that a named component failed.
04Work through useful checksThe goal is to reduce uncertainty before replacing parts or deciding professional diagnosis is the safer next step.

Where vehicle information comes from

CarCause uses public vehicle information when available to make identification more accurate. VIN decoding and vehicle identity data can use NHTSA vPIC, configuration choices can use FuelEconomy.gov data, and recall information can use NHTSA safety recall data. Availability and detail vary by model year and vehicle.

Why VIN helps

A model name can represent several engines, drivetrains, transmissions, or trims. When you are unsure which configuration you have, entering the VIN is usually better than guessing.

What CarCause does not do

CarCause does not guarantee a repair, replace a physical inspection, or make a vehicle safe to drive. Some faults require measurements, specialized tools, manufacturer procedures, or hands-on inspection that a web application cannot perform.

  • Do not use a trouble code by itself as proof that a part should be replaced.
  • Verify exact specifications and repair procedures for the specific vehicle before performing work.
  • Stop driving when a problem may affect braking, steering, oil pressure, cooling, fuel containment, or other safety-critical operation.
  • Use a qualified professional when the next diagnostic step requires equipment, access, or experience you do not have.
